Psychological Solutions For A Better Life

imageThere are a number of myths surrounding the older generation and  their sexual practices. I remember when I was in my late teens my friends and I discussed whether our parents would still have sex. The unanimous response was “NO WAY”.  Our parents would have been in their late 40s at that time. Not much has changed over the last 40 or 50 years. There still seems to be a ban on talking about senior citizens and their sexual experiences. What did you think when you looked at the above picture? Be honest! The University of Chicago published in August 2007 interesting research findings of the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project (NSHAP). For the study 3005 men and women were interviewed and – to the surprise of the research team – quite happy to share their experiences. They learnt that 73% of people between the age 57 and 64 –  53% of people between 64 and 75 – and 26% of people between 75 and 85 have sex several time per month. Those who were having sex showed in general a much better physical health than those who did not. It was concluded sexual problems in the life of elderly are rather an indicator that other, more serious health problems are playing a part.

And not only that, having regular sexual intimcy is an antidote to depression, stress, and other emotional problems that gets people down. The sense of closeness and connection seems to be the main benefit and a corner stone to a harmonious relationship as we grow older together.

One conclusion from this research supports the “use it or lose it” saying that previous studies had brought to the surface. It appears that a large number of senior citizens are enjoying not only the emotional, but also the physical benefits of a healthy lifestyle that includes sexual intimacy.
